Eelgrass (Zostera marina L.) in the Dutch Wadden Sea historically covered an area varying from 65–150 km2 in the eulittoral as well as the sublittoral zones. At present, this area comprises less than 1 km2 eulittoral eelgrass stands, with an associated decrease in habitat diversity. The causes for this decline are presumably
connected with the ‘wasting disease’ and the closure of the former Zuiderzee in the early 1930s resulting in increased tidal
range and increased currents. After a slight recovery of the eelgrass populations on the intertidal flats a definite decline
started in the early 1970s, possibly connected to increased turbidity. The present water quality and turbidity do not negatively
influence eelgrass growth up to a depth of at least 0.6m below Mean Sea Level. Based on mesocosm experiments and field experiments
it is concluded that re-establishment of eelgrass should be possible in sheltered bays and on unexposed tidal flats. The most
suitable depths for a reintroduction are those between 0 and 20–40 cm below mean sea level. 相似文献

Biological rhythms are a result of interplay between endogenous clocks and the ambient light–dark (LD) cycle. Biological timing
in resident polar organisms presents a conundrum because these experience distinct daily LD cycles for only a few weeks each
year. We measured locomotor activity in reindeer, Rangifer tarandus platyrhynchus (SR, n = 5 and 6) and R. tarandus tarandus (NR, n = 6), ranging freely at 78 and 70°N, respectively, continuously throughout 1 year using data loggers. NR, but not SR, are
gregarious which enabled us to examine the integrated effects of differences in social organisation and the photic environment
at two different latitudes on the organisation of activity. In both sub-species, ultradian bouts of activity and inactivity
alternated across the 24-h day throughout the year. This pattern was modified by the LD cycle in NR but barely at all in SR.
Periodogram analysis revealed significant ultradian rhythmicity in both sub-species; the frequency of daily cycles of activity
increased from three per day in winter to nearly five in summer. We conclude that this increase, and a concomitant increase
in the level of daily activity, reflected the seasonal increase in the animals’ appetite and the quality of their forage.
Secondly, the combination, most evident in SR, of a weak photic response, weak circadian mechanisms and a weak social synchronization
reduces the constraints of biological timing in an environment which is effectively non-rhythmic most of the year and permits
expression of the basic ultradian pattern of ruminant activity. Third, the weaker 24-h rhythmicity in SR compared to NR indicates
a latitudinal decrease in circadian organization and photic responsiveness in Rangifer. 相似文献

El Niño is well known to affect marine fishery. The Southern Oscillation, however, may also have a strong effect on riverine fish production in floodplains via its effect on river discharge. In years with high river discharges larger parts of the floodplain are inundated, increasing the surface area of suitable nursery grounds for young fish stock. In this way high river discharges are thought to have a positive effect on fish production, while low discharges are thought to have a negative effect. The collapse of the sábalo fishery in the Pilcomayo River in Bolivia, for instance, can be attributed to the 1990–1995 El Niño event and subsequent overexploitation of the fish stocks. 相似文献

Over a 65½ year period, in 288 pregnancies a variety of fetal malformations were detected by ultrasound. Two hundred and ten fetuses (73 per cent) were karyotyped. Gestational age at detection ranged from 11 to 38 weeks. The incidence of an abnormal karyotype in the total series was 14 per cent and 14.7 per cent in the 210 pregnancies in which a karyotype was performed. Single structural anomalies were found in 149 cytogenetically investigated fetuses, of which 25 had a chromosomal abnormality (17 per cent). Multiple structural malformations were present in 61 fetuses, of which 16 had an abnormal karyotype (26 per cent). Trisomy 18 was the most frequent finding. The most constant ultrasound finding in cases of an abnormal karyotype was polyhydramnios and severe IUGR in combination with structural defects. Perfluorooctanesulfonyl fluoride (POSF, C8F17SO2F) related-materials have been used as surfactants, paper and packaging treatments, and surface (e.g., carpet, textile, upholstery) protectants. A metabolite, perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS, C8F17SO3−), has been identified in the serum and liver of non-occupationally exposed humans and wildlife. Because of its persistence, an important question was whether elderly humans might have higher PFOS concentrations. From a prospective study designed to examine cognitive function in the Seattle (WA) metropolitan area, blood samples were collected from 238 dementia-free subjects (ages 65–96). High-pressure liquid chromatography-electrospray tandem mass spectrometry determined seven fluorochemicals: PFOS; N-ethyl perfluorooctanesulfonamidoacetate; N-methyl perfluorooctanesulfonamidoacetate; perfluorooctanesulfonamidoacetate; perfluorooctanesulfonamide; perfluorooctanoate; and perfluorohexanesulfonate. Serum PFOS concentrations ranged from less than the lower limit of quantitation (3.4 ppb) to 175.0 ppb (geometric mean 31.0 ppb; 95% CI 28.8–33.4). An estimate of the 95% tolerance limit was 84.1 ppb (upper 95% confidence limit 104.0 ppb). Serum PFOS concentrations were slightly lower among the most elderly. There were no significant differences by sex or years residence in Seattle. The distributions of the other fluorochemicals were approximately an order of magnitude lower. Similar to other reported findings of younger adults, the geometric mean serum PFOS concentration in non-occupational adult populations likely approximates 30–40 ppb with 95% of the population’s serum PFOS concentrations below 100 ppb. 相似文献

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were analysed in weathered bottom ash from different municipal solid waste incinerators. The sum of the 16 "USEPA" PAHs was found to vary from 480 to 3590 microg/kg. The amounts of carcinogenic PAHs were between 89 and 438 microg/kg ash. The maximum levels of carcinogenic PAHs exceed the Swedish generic guidelines for sensitive land use. The results showed that the amount of PAHs in fresh and weathered bottom ash are similar, indicating that the PAHs are strongly bound to the ash and only limited amounts are released to the surroundings. 相似文献

Livers from 130 specimens corresponding to 18 species of raptors from Spain were analysed for persistent organochlorine (OC) residues. In all species, p,p'-DDE was the most abundant individual OC compound detected, with geometric means ranging from 61 to 40,086 ng/g ww. The geometric mean for summation operator PCB ranged from 225 to 9184 ng/g ww. Migration to Africa, south of Sahara, where p,p'-DDT is still in use, was not associated with higher liver concentrations of its metabolite, p,p'-DDE. The presence of birds in the diet of the species was an important species-specific factor determining the mean liver concentrations of p,p'-DDE and summation operator PCB. The effect of the diet on OC concentrations in liver is explained by the lower metabolising capacity of OC compounds in birds, especially for p,p'-DDE. 相似文献

Methods of conducting a chronic sediment toxicity test with the estuarine amphipod Corophium volutator are described. They consist of a 49-day exposure, after which mortality, growth and reproduction are determined. Pilot experiments were used to optimize test design parameters such as temperature, duration, feeding and refreshing regimes, and effects of indigenous organisms. By way of further validation, the present study focused on the effects of four different parameters: oxygen saturation, salinity, ammonium and nitrite. These confounding factors might play an important role especially if the test is used for risk assessment of field-contaminated sediments. It is concluded that the present experimental design is well suited for chronic sediment exposures with C. volutator. The test can be performed at a broad range of salinity values, provided that controls are performed at the same salinity. Results further demonstrate that with the endpoints growth and reproduction this chronic test procedure is a factor 7-18 more sensitive to ammonium and nitrate than the standardized acute bioassay (endpoint mortality). 相似文献

The soil compartment is an important interface between the atmosphere and the subsurface hydrosphere. In this paper a conceptual approach for regional hydrologic soil modelling (RHSM) is presented, which provides two important qualities for modelling. First, the soil compartment is directly coupled to the atmosphere via the land surface and to the aquifers. Second, extremely fine (5cm vertical) resolutions of the soil system can be realized at regional scales (several hundreds of km(2)). This high-resolution modelling could be achieved by parallel computation techniques. The RHSM approach is applied to the Beerze-Reusel drainage basin, which belongs to the Meuse River basin. Moisture transport in the soil system was calculated with extremely high vertical resolution at a regional scale based on rainfall-evaporation data for the year 2000. As a result, highly resolved regional groundwater recharge pattern addressing the heterogeneity of soil systems could be determined. 相似文献

Pioneer plant species were observed growing on mined areas despite unfavourable conditions such as extreme pH, high salinity and phytotoxic levels of several elements. This study evaluated the contribution of pioneer species to the accumulation of soil organic matter (SOM). We collected 51 samples from 17 non-vegetated, natural and pioneer-vegetated sites in five highly saline mined areas in the Sierra de Cartagena (Spain). The composition of SOM was determined using total C, N and S elemental anlayzer, pyrolysis and solid state (13)C NMR spectroscopy. Results showed that pioneer species like Lygeum spartum had contributed approximately 11 kg SOM kg(-1) soil into the Balsa Rosa sites since 1991; it will take approximately 120 years of continuous growth for this plant to increase the SOM level comparable to natural site. In the Portman Bay area, Sarconia ramosissima and Phragmites australis can contribute SOM equivalent to present day SOM in natural sites in the next 30 years. Low quality SOM (C/N>20) deposited by pioneer plants was dominated by lignin-derived organic compounds such as phenols, guaiacols, syringols and aromatics while polyssacharides and alkyls were the major components in high quality SOM (C/N<20). The addition of SOM to mine wastes is similar to early stages of soil formation and with time, we expect the formation of well-developed Ah horizon on the surface of mine wastes. The presence of P. australis on several sites makes it a very good candidate for successful revegetation of hostile conditions found in many mined sites. 相似文献
